Colonoscopy:
Do I need this procedure?
Indications for a colonoscopy include:
- As a screening exam for anyone over the age of 50
- Family history of colon cancer
- History of previous colon polyps or colon cancer
- Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding
- A change in bowel habits
- Diarrhea
- Iron deficiency anemia
- Unexplained weight loss
- Chronic, unexplained abdominal pain
A colonoscopy is the only method of colon cancer screening
that examines the entire colon and allows for removal of polyps at the same
time.
